In order to win the affections of the mortal Theophane, Poseidon, the sea god, turned himself into a ram and Theophane into a ewe. Their subsequent offspring was a golden ram. This ram was found by Hermes and given to Phrixus and Helle, the children of the King and Queen of Boetia. The Queen, Nephele, told her children to take the golden ram to Colchis and sacrifice it to Aries the god of war. This they did and then they removed its golden fleece which was hung in the temple of Aries guarded by a dragon and a serpent until Jason and his Argonauts claimed it generations later. To commemorate the sacrifice Zeus gave the ram his own six starred constellation.

Hercules, the half human-half god, son of Zeus, was challenged to perform twelve tasks by King Eurystheus, in order to atone for his sins. His second task was to kill the grotesque hydra, a nine headed serpent, with poisoned breath which was sacred to the goddess Hera. Hercules was unsuccessful at first because every time he cut off one of the Hydra's heads two more grew back. Eventually he hatched a cunning plan, every time he cut off a head his nephew Lolaus burnt the neck so new heads could not grow back. Sensing that Hercules would triumph, Hera, in a last ditch attempt to thwart him, sent a crab to attack Hercules. Hercules was not distracted and killed both the crab and the Hydra. To commemorate his sons great deed, Zeus placed the crab in the six starred constellation Cancer.

Pan, son of the messenger god Hermes, was goat-like in form. He was very energetic and helped the gods defeat the Titans and the Persians on many occasions. During one battle against the titans, the gods had to retreat towards the Nile and Pan cleverly changed his hind legs and lower body into that of a fish to enable him to cross the dangerous Nile. Zeus was so impressed with Pans ingenuity that he awarded him his own eight starred constellation, Capricorn.

In order to seduce Leda, the queen of Sparta, Zeus, god of gods, disguised himself as a swan. Unable to reject his advances Leda had an affair with Zeus behind her husband, King Tyndareus's back. She produced two eggs, each egg produced twins. In one egg was the god Pollux and goddess Helen, fathered by Zeus. In the other egg were the mortals Castor and Clytemnestra, fathered by king Tyndareus. Despite one being a god and the other human, Castor and Pollux were inseparable. They played together, learned together and fought battles together. When Castor was killed in battle Zeus was so moved by Pollux's tears of despair that he placed them side by side eternally in the seven starred constellation Gemini.

Beautiful relaxing music composed for Librans by Libran Fiona Quinn.

Libra is not only the only sign not to be represented by an animal or human but is also the only sign with no mythological story associated. Although Libra does not have a mythological origin it does have a philosophical ideal based around the Egyptian 'Book of the Dead'. The book pronounces that when we die, on our judgement day, the destiny of our soul is decided by placing our hearts on one side of the scales of justice and a feather, symbolising truth, on the other side. If we have led a good and true life the scales should balance. The scales are placed in the four starred constellation Libra.

The giant Orion, son of the sea god Poseidon, was the most handsome man on earth. One of his many admirers was the goddess Eos who made no secret of her desire for the giant. Whilst boasting to Eos, Orion claimed that his hunting prowess was so great that he could kill every wild herd on the planet. This so incensed the god Apollo, who had overheard the claim, that he sent a giant scorpion to kill Orion. Apollo's sister Artemis, the goddess of hunting found out about Apollo's plan and because she also admired Orion she endeavoured to protect him and kill the scorpion. As the scorpion attacked Orion, Artemis tried to kill it with an arrow but missed and instead killed Orion. To commemorate these events the god of gods Zeus placed the scorpion in the seven starred constellation Scorpio.
